I was both moved and enlightened listening to Glass discuss aspects of being gay in a still intolerant society that I had not considered so clearly. Glass explains that what motivated him to finally come out publicly was hearing about gay young people who are hurting and killing themselves as a result of the harassment and bullying they experience just for being gay. Nevertheless, he candidly discusses the fear and anxiety he experienced about his closeted sexually in his professional life. In the interview Glass explains that he has been out to family and close friends for some fifteen years, and has enjoyed acceptance from them. I also think that this episode represents a new milestone in the growth of podcasting as a medium. Having just listened to the program today, I can say I’m impressed how Maron played his role as host and interviewer with compassion, while also bringing lightness and humor. Glass, who is 47 years old and hosts his own podcast, obviously decided to do this on WTF because he trusted Maron’s ability to handle the situation with empathy and grace. But this week comedian and actor Todd Glass brought his story to Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, coming out of the closet to the public and the comedy community at large. A comedian or someone a little less famous in the mainstream might take it to Howard Stern or another syndicated morning show. Listen to the entire WTF with Marc Maron episode here.It used to be when a politician, celebrity or someone in the entertainment business had a big announcement to make that person would make an appearance with the likes of Barbara Walters or Larry King. “What we do is such a collaborative sport … And to do something that is just you on your own and very solitary, I find very meditative.” The attention paid to art at the top winds down when the conversation turns more toward movies, but not before Maron asks Pitt if he’s maintained his recent activity as a sculptor in his own right. Some of Thomas’s stuff could scare them as well.” “Just certain things that move me and I like to be around each day, and that might inspire my kids or something. “You’re not buying it as an investment,” Maron suggests. “Oh, I wouldn’t know how to describe that,” he says, adding that the word “collection” bothers him. Queried about what kind of art he gravitates to for his collection, Pitt demurs. The art talk not yet extinguished, Maron asks Pitt about artist Thomas Houseago and inquires as to whether he has any of his large sculptures in his home. underground art scene trying to make it in New York is a very tough transition.” But that’s one of the weird chips on his shoulder: that, you know, he never got established art success.”ĭiCaprio: “Well, he was with Tony Shafrazi in New York for a while. You will hear nothing but wonderful things.” “I collect Robert Williams, too,” DiCaprio says. Maron says of Williams (who appeared on his show back in 2015, with the designation that he “on Marc’s Mount Olympus of Mind-Blowers”): “And Robert Williams is very bitter about it all.” He is the man from the underground art scene that has hit the marketplace and actually become … you know.” Of works by Crumb, the actor says, “I picked up a couple, luckily. Talk turns to artists of the sort that DiCaprio, a former ARTnews Top 200 Collector, buys: R. … I grew up going to the Doo Dah Parade and hanging out with all these underground artists.” It was a broken-down, yellow, messed-up station wagon … Basically every weekend of my life was trucking around to comic-book stores and head shops, selling Duran Duran posters and The Fabulous Freak Brothers and Cherry Poptart. So does my man here,” Pitt says, nodding to DiCaprio.ĭiCaprio chimes in with some colorful talk of learning about art from his father, whom he calls “a Zelig of the counter hippie culture.” “He was a comic-book distributor around Los Angeles, and he used to take me in his station wagon, called the Pus Mobile. I mean, you’re an abstract guy, right? You like abstract art?” There’s something about abstraction that either it’s going to work or it’s not.
